JONATHAN CHERRY: What do you want your photos to look like?
CHRISTOPHER SCHRECK: I don’t consciously think of what I do in terms of having a particular style and I definitely don’t have a full sense of what I want the photos to look like before they’re taken. I’d imagine that having a preconceived notion like that would really limit the way I work and see things, and I think my photos would be a lot less successful for it. I really just hope that each image looks like everything fell into place nicely on its own terms.
JC: What do you do when you are not in the mood to go out and photograph?
CS: Play with my band Icy Demons, work on videos, tackle whatever other projects I’ve got lined up (lately it’s been zines), go drinking with friends, ride the bike around, check out shows, watch Law & Order.
JC: Apart from Dennis Hopper and Jacob Holdt has there been any contemporary image-makers who inspire you and your practice?
CS: Have you seen Jennilee’s work? It’s hard not to be inspired by what that girl’s doing at any given moment.
JC: What music do you listen to?
CS: My iTunes Most Played tells me that my top 5 are Beach Boys, Can, Miles Davis, Emitt Rhodes, and Arthur Russell. I’ve also been listening to tracks from the new Chandeliers record a lot lately – it’s going to be pretty relentless.
JC: What did you eat for breakfast today?
CS: Scrambled eggs, an apple, and yerba mate.
