JONATHAN CHERRY: What is your favourite breakfast food?
JEFF MCLANE: Soft-boiled egg on wheat toast, coffee & juice.
JC: What time of day do you enjoy photographing at most?
JM: It depends where I am. When I’m traveling, I love waking up early and shooting. In Los Angeles, I enjoy working 11am - 3pm, for the direct southern california sun and lack of traffic.
JC: What is your current project all about?
JM: Basically, it has to do with my own change from serial landscape work, to making images not held to their physical representations. As a collection, they illustrate an interest I have in objects of technology, and subjects with aesthetic conversion and boundaries. It is a challenge for me because most of the work comes to form through editing, which is a relatively new way of working for me.
JC: When was the last time you flicked through a photography book and which artist was it?
JM: Lately looking at the work in Lay Flat #2. I’m also have a great book of work by Florian Maier-Aichen.
JC: What equipment do you use and how do you think it benefits your practice?
JM: I am usually using a view camera. In past year, I have begun using a digital camera much more, and am becoming very attached to a digital workflow with Lightroom. But if I necessitate the highest quality for a work, I still turn to film, although many aspects of it can be distracting to the image making process. The less I have to think about my camera, the more I enjoy making work. I am torn between a issue of quality and application.
JC: What has 2010 got in store for you photographically?
JM: I would like to work more in studio environments, more examinations then expeditions. I have started making portraits lately, and am thinking of ways those can contribute to my images. I am looking forward to summer, and spending time with my camera by the coastline.
JC: When your not taking photographs what can you be found doing?
JM: Traveling with my girlfriend, swimming in the ocean, finding good food in cheap places.
JC: Favourite room in the house?
JM: I have an amazing porch over my backyard that has a great view of the city. I spend much of my time at home out there.
